The Pokemon Club is run by Ms. Henderson in portable 2B. Meeting every Wednesday after school, students are given a space to play the Pokemon Trading Card Game!
Due to student demand, Ms. Henderson decided to start and sponsor the club at the start of the school year. An avid Pokemon fan, she gladly hosted the club for students. “I started playing Pokemon Yellow on the Gameboy Color in elementary school, and collected cards and played most main line games since. But I’ve never gotten a holographic Charizard card before,” Henderson disclosed.
All students interested in Pokemon are encouraged to go, even if they have never played the card game before. “Pokémon is incredibly easy to understand the basics of and people can begin playing quickly. There are a lot of materials out there that help ease new players into the game!” Ms. Henderson explained. “But beyond that, there is a lot of depth that can be learned, and I think that makes the game really interesting. You can stick to the basics or, you can get really into competitive scenes with a lot of strategy involved. It really has a lot of ways for everyone to enjoy the card game how they want to.”
Senior Julio Gomez got to play his first battle in the comfort of Ms. Henderson’s classroom: “I brought the cards that I bought the other day, and I lost my first battle, but it was fun to learn how to play,” Julio revealed.
The club averages about 10 attendees every week but more are encouraged! Ms. Henderson is enthusiastic about teaching new players the basics of the game. “Sharing a hobby with someone is a really great experience. Trading cards are inherently all about hanging out with others and having fun playing a game together. So, to be able to share something like that and see them smiling and laughing while playing is the greatest feeling. The Pokémon community is extremely welcoming and we’re always thrilled to make new friends,” Ms. Henderson expressed.
