Our HOSA organization hosted a suicide on the morning of March 29th, around 300 students, parents, and concerned community members attended the walk around our track.
Hosted by HOSA sponsor, Billie Tolbert, this is her second time hosting a suicide walk as the Walk Co-Chair for the South Texas Chapter of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, However this is her first time hosting it by herself, at her home campus. “It was exciting to see all of the planning come together.” Mrs. Tolbert.

As the crowd of attendees gathered in front of the DEMAC at 8 in the morning, breakfast items were provided by our culinary class. Everyone was given the assignment to visit the multiple vendors around the parking lot for a donut. These vendors were providing resources and information about suicide prevention. Before the run, Ms. Tolbert and District 10 Councilman Marc Whyte gave a speech about suicide prevention and a special thank you to all the attendees who appeared. When the walk began, the goal for attendees was to walk 13 laps around the track, with refreshing doughnuts for those who completed the walk. The huge turnout was a heartwarming success for Ms. Tolbert, raising over 7000 dollars through the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention’s website. She was proud to be able to host the walk on her home campus, “I hope to get more people next time. The best way to do that, I believe, is to get the word out and let people know that the event just isn’t for students.” Tolbert explained.
