In the classroom, she blends in like any other student. But once the whistle blows and she steps onto the court, Deylen Mendivil becomes a force to be reckoned with. She is a division 1 commit headed to United States Air Force Academy.
Since her freshman year she has been on a mission. Playing varsity as a freshmen, she quickly made a statement as an all around player with grit and talent to stand out. Born In San Antonio, she has risen to become one of the top players in the nation, ranked 86th nationally, 70th in Texas, and 13th in freelance for key volleyball stats. However, beyond the numbers and awards, her leadership, discipline, and character truly set her apart.
“I started playing when I was eight,” Deylen said. “I was always the no-contact sport kid. But I grew to love the sport. I would always play outside my house all the time. Volleyball stuck with me.” Her love for the game grew when she took on the role as captain. Leading is not just about calling plays or being the loudest voice on the court. It is about bringing out the best in others. Deylen has grown to learn this with time and intention.
“The biggest thing I have learned from being a captain is leadership and communication,” she explained. “Everyone has different styles of communication. Bringing the best out of everybody has been a challenge, but I have grown to overcome it by getting everyone to come together.”
Her growth has not gone unnoticed. Coach Wolfe has seen Deylen transform from a silent example to a vocal lead. Making an inspiring presence for her younger players, both with action and attitude. “Deylen leads both by example and voice,” said coach Wolfe. “She helps develop the younger players and tells them exactly how to Improve; her attitude is amazing. She used to be a quiet leader, but now she is finding her voice. She truly is a true teammate who believes you are only as strong as your weakest link.”
Off the court, Deylen balances the demanding life of a student athlete with grace and purpose. Whether she is traveling with her club team or studying for a big test, she brings the same energy and commitment to her academics as she does with volleyball. “I have always said as a student athlete, your student comes first.” Deylen said. “Time management is key. But if you are a driven person, you can succeed in both. I am competitive on the court and in the classroom.”
That competitive spirit is fueled by one of her biggest inspirations, Kobe Bryant. His “Mamba Mentality” influences how Deylen approaches her goals, her determination, her resilience, and her desire to improve every day. “When I was little, I read a book about him.” she said. “The Mamba Mentality is about drive — working hard outside of practice and with your teammates. I can always look back at him to remind myself to push harder.”
As she prepares for the next chapter at the air force academy, Deylen Mendivil carries more than her stats and skills. She carries the lessons she learned, the teammates she lifted, and a mindset geared for greatness. No matter where the game takes her, she is already showing she has what it takes to lead.
