The clothing recycle bin is an often overlooked item that students see on their walks to class but aren’t aware of its purpose.
According to Fillthebins.com, about 17 billion pounds of clothing is thrown away in a landfill annually, many of which are perfectly wearable. Only 15% of unwanted textile is recycled, by recycling clothing and textile, it allows them to be redistributed and reused.
A textile recycle franchise called The Clothes Bin has made it their mission to make conveniently placed textile bins. The company made recycling programs for schools and organizations, allowing clothing to be recycled rather than being discarded in a landfill. The company has partnered with over 400 schools and organizations across the country to help sell collected textile, providing compensation for every pound donated.
You can recycle all of the following items in the bins:
•Clothes
•Shoes
•Undergarments
•Hats
•Accessories and handbags
•Linen (blankets, towels etc.)
There are three bins on campus, two are in the parking lot outside the L building and one is located outside the K building. If you have clothes that are too torn up or stained to be donated, locate one of the clothing recycle bins around the campus.
